Meet the Flying Actor Studio - Drop-In Class

A survey of the Flying Actor Studio methods including improvisation, imagination, time, movement, mask, and mime. This class is offered on a sliding scale to make our classes accessible, while also meeting our rental needs. Pay what you’re willing.

FLYING ACTOR STUDIO offers a 30 week course of daily intensive training in all aspects of physical theatre. This rigorous course is designed for those who are interested in an 8 month commitment to learn the creative approaches and technical skills necessary to make resonating visual theatre that speaks to our times. The neo-classic arts of the clown/mime will be a special emphasis of study. Actors wishing to expand the command of their bodies and imaginations will find a creative physical base that will serve them in all areas of their professional work. The physical actor is the most grounded of all performers . . . but when flying, can evoke awe, wonder, joy, and mystery. This is a very physical class which includes the disciplines— movement, mask, improvisation, ensemble dynamics, dramatic structure, and neo-classic mime & clown. Flying Actor methods inspire the actor to answer questions of space with mastery and imagination. Actors will find a creative base that will serve them in all areas of their professional work. Directors will discover new ideas about staging, timing and energy. This course is the foundation of the movement for actors training method that Donlon has created and taught in many leading conservatories such as The Yale School of Drama, The American Conservatory Theatre, The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, UC-Santa Barbara, UC-San Diego, The National Theatre Conservatory-Denver Center, and international schools like Ireland's Gaiety School of Acting. Oscar winning actors Javier Bardem and Kathy Bates have applied the Donlon method to their film work. Explore the fundamental performance techniques of the mime-clown through the internationally recognized Donlon method. Strengthen your ability to transform an empty space into resonating visual theatre. Probe the world of the trickster and fool. This intensive is designed for those who are serious about a professional career in the physical theatre. Noted actor/clowns have trained with Donlon including Tony Award Winner Bill Irwin, and the Big Apple Circus' Barry Lubin. Neo-Classic Mime & Clown - Weekend Intensive

This rigorous course is designed for those who want a daily 3 hour immersion into the creative approaches and technical skills necessary to make resonating visual theatre that speaks to our times. The neo-classic arts of the clown/mime, mask, and ensemble movement will be a special emphasis of study. Actors wishing to expand the command of their bodies and imaginations will find a creative physical base that will serve them in all areas of their professional work. Directors will discover new ideas about dramatic structure, space, timing and energy.
Physical Theatre Summer Intensive

Cost: $280
We will explore how gesture, economy, and timing are an actor's greatest tools. Using a number of techniques including Laban, observation, object study and mask, we will work to create an original character through physicality. We will examine the inherit wisdom of the body, and how ultimately the body and mind fuse in the creation of character.
Teen actors wishing to also enroll in the Physical Theatre Summer Intensive with master teachers James Donlon & Leonard Pitt, Monday through Friday, 9am to Noon, July 19 to 30, can pay a total tuition of $480 for The Physical Character class and the Summer Intensive. This is a $150 savings off the regular Summer Intensive tuition.
